Finding food today
Do this first
Call 211 or search their food listings

Call first — food access changes quickly
Many food banks operate limited days, may require appointments, and may have geographic (catchment) boundaries. Nothing on this page is a promise that a specific site is open today. What to say when you call
“I need food today. I’m near [intersection / postal code]. Do I need an appointment or client ID? Do you serve my area? What should I bring?”
If you are calling for groceries versus a hot meal, say so — some programs do one, some do both, and the person on the line can redirect you.
What to bring, if you can
- Bags or a cart — food can get heavy fast.
- Your client ID, if you're already registered with Daily Bread.
- ID and proof of address, if available — requirements vary by site, so ask when you call.
No ID?
At Daily Bread member food banks, registration information is optional and not providing it will not be used to deny you food. Other programs set their own rules — call first. If you're turned away
Being outside a catchment area is the most common reason. Ask:
- “Which food bank covers my address? Can you refer me?”
- “When is the next available appointment?”
- “Is there a meal program nearby that serves anyone today?”
- “Can 211 suggest an alternative?” — then call 211.
Drop-ins often serve meals with no registration at all — they can bridge the gap while you sort out a food bank.

Peer worker tips
- Help with the one-time Daily Bread client ID registration — it smooths every later visit.
- Check transit cost against catchment before suggesting a site; a wrong-catchment trip costs money and morale.
- Keep a note of which sites recently confirmed hours, and when — food access details go stale fast.
- Pair a food call with a drop-in suggestion for the same day, so there's a fallback meal.
